Today, the US dropped a rather strange weapon on the Al Queda caves that’s popularly referred to as a “Daisy Cutter”.

The Daisy Cutter is actually not a particularly effective weapon tactically, unless you’re looking to instantly barbecue a pasture full of cows or clear yourself a helicopter landing pad in 30 seconds. It’s basically a really big explosive device, not an incendiary device, that is built to level ground without leaving a crater.

It’s the biggest bomb in the US inventory at 15,000 pounds but it’s still got nowhere near the power of a nuclear device. It’s so big that it doesn’t fit in the bomb racks of any of the US bombers and it has to be parachuted out of the back door of a C-130. Rather goofy, but with a blast radius of 900 feet, who cares?
