Dear Boy:

The quake now measures 7.0 on the Richter scale and was centered 30 miles under Puget Sound, about 30 miles southwest of Seattle, northeast of Olympia. Was the Juan de Fuca plate sliding under the North American plate. Plenty of damage in downtown Seattle and southern outlying areas. May be some damage to the new baseball/football stadium at Safeco Field — they don’t know yet. No aftershocks yet. Some fires in progress It’s the strongest quake in the Pacific Northwest since a 7.2 back in 1949 in the same area. Still no damage in Vancouver area, except for a few broken dishes, etc.
