L&H makes THE speech recognition tools used by everybody from TellMe to BeVocal to AT&T. They were poised to benefit from the emergence of the Voice Web better than most.

Apparently they blew it.

Lernout & Hauspie gets bankruptcy protection

A judge yesterday granted bankruptcy protection to Lernout & Hauspie NV, the once high-flying company that made billions with voice-controlled computer technology and wowed firms like Microsoft Corp. and Intel Corp. before crashing amid accusations of financial misdeeds. The company chairman later indicated Lernout’s restructuring plan includes cutting about 1,200 jobs, or about 20 per cent of its work force. Saying there is “no doubt there was fraud” at Lernout & Hauspie, Judge Michel Handschoewerker cleared the way for the Belgian company to seek protection from creditors while it restructures.
