Wow Ian great post- Couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks for this one.

It made me think of the quote from Steve @ the stanford commencement speech:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma â€” which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition”

Ian makes a good argument but draws the wrong conclusion. There are many individuals in the world like Steve Jobs, capable of vision, inspiration and recognizing trends in social and technology that can manifest in products that seem as the old Panasonic’s tagline went “…just slightly ahead of their time.” There won’t likely be another Steve Jobs heading a major corporation because the operations and accounting people rarely believe they have someone like that in their midst, and insist on facts, competitive comparisons, and roi arguments to quash innovation in favour of “make us an iPhone, but cheaper” arguments.
