The government should have stepped in years ago as this should be wrapped up into the system access fee. To encode voice data and transmit that is WAY more expensive to the network than 140 characters of text that can be compressed to probably about 60… yes, 60 bytes. 60 bytes is smaller than most TCP/IP headers.

Too bad that we are stuck with monopolizing wireless carriers. Europe is so much better off. They rely much heavier on SMS and actually understand how to use it. Still, most of us pay the same amount for basic wireless service in Canada than those do who live in France. The larger carriers in France (Free, Neuf, FT) are charging about $45 CDN for triple-play: wireless, television and 100 mbps internet (yes, 20 times faster than Rogers). Not to mention that most cell phones have VOIP in them and you can connect to anyone’s wireless router and use capped public internet bandwidth instead of precious daytime cell minutes.

It’s a shame that our telcos are charging us soo much and providing so little. I wouldn’t care if they actually provided enhanced and emerging technology but we are so far behind the curve that cities that have existed for hundreds of years are pulling away from us. Too bad the government won’t step in, I’m sure they’re getting kick backs all the way to the bank.

6Gb a day of text messaging is what $6.8 million a day in pure profit! Who are we kidding?

Every single Canadian who has a cell phone should be reading this article… I could send the link myself and generate millions of $$$ in revenue for the telcos. Think they would mind?

I have been asked to be on CBC Almanac (690am) at 1:30pm on Wednesday; the topic will be text messaging. Would you be able to call in? If you can’t, can I quote from this post?

Class!
